The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced on Thursday that the administration would bar immigrants in the country illegally from enrolling in Head Start, a federally funded preschool program.
People who are in the country unlawfully are generally not eligible for most federal public benefits, such as food stamps or financial aid for college. However, for decades, they have been able to use some community-based programs, such as Head Start and community health centers.
HHS said it would now classify those programs as federal public benefits, making immigrants in the country illegally ineligible to enroll in them. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said the move was part of a broader effort to protect the interests of American citizens.
Meanwhile, the Department of Education is set to end free tuition for undocumented students enrolled in postsecondary career and technical education programs. The Department of Agriculture is also set to limit access to federally funded food assistance initiatives, and the Department of Labor plans to block undocumented immigrants from receiving federal workforce development grants and resources
