(5,167 posts)It grinds their gears that they sometimes miss out on a buck because they have to avoid polluting or pay fair wages or can't form a monopoly or can't commit securities fraud. They don't want to have to waste money making sure their products are safe, internalising the environmental costs of their products that they currently externalise, worrying about worker safety, or moderating content. They don't want the IRS rooting around in their books to make sure they pay their taxes. And they sure as shit don't want to pay more taxes so the government can hire enough people to enforce those regulations.
And what they don't hate, they want to privatise. They don't want to have to compete with necessary services being run by an entity that doesn't have a profit motive. They want captive audiences for health care, postal services, public utilities, etc. so they can jack up the prices and people can't do anything about it.
Grover Norquist said in 2001 "I dont want to abolish government. I simply want to reduce it to the size where I can drag it into the bathroom and drown it in the bathtub."
This has been the project the entire time. Donald Trump is the shiny, wavey distraction while the apparatchiks behind the scenes dismantle the administrative state that keeps Americans safe and is intended to watch out for their interests instead of the interests of private entities.
