(6,419 posts)80. One of the big disadvantages of vertical turbines
is the blade fatigue stress that occurs each revolution as the blades go from tension while rotating with the wind to compression as they rotate back into the wind. I dunno, that could have been one of the factors that shut down the Tehachapi farm.
I was into wind turbine building myself - biggest was a 3 blade HWAT 13' in diameter driving a 3ph PM motor to alternator conversion.

Seems to me the way you phrased this (re: it's efficiency) was a bit snooty. Poster Diaffected had a similar view but

I did mention they can be as high as you like, no limitation to height and the bird kill and maintence of huge blades.

Shielding from the wind wouldn't be a factor if the field is designed to space units from blocking each other.

Seen em in Tuscon and Flagstaff areas... I think they are found at certain elevations.
