The Fifth Risk [View all]

I haven't read this, but it was recommended to me by a friend. It sounds very apropos for the times we're living in, where billionaires want to own, control, and personally profit from everything everyone else needs to survive.

It documents how some businessmen were working to privatize weather information. Our public service weather science provides information for all the weather reports we get. We can complain when they are wrong, but I wouldn’t want to be without them. We pay for this service in our taxes.

Privatizing it would make it only available to those who can pay even more for it. We all need the information, not just those who can afford it. I am concerned about this effort to monetize everything with no shared services. It creates barriers that are cruel and unnecessary.
