17. Our Town is a Prime Target Because...

First of all, my Quaker meeting is part of the NY Yearly meeting that joined a lawsuit with Sikh Temple Sacramento and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship as well as the yearly meetings of Philadelphia, New England, Baltimore, Adelphi, and Richmond in Indiana against a "new policy that allows federal immigration authorities to enter houses of worship for enforcement actions" (Democracy Forward). Second, our town has been a sanctuary city since 1985. Third, three educational institutions have been targeted: the school district for having a BIPOC event for four years to which (supposedly) white children were not invited to (this one instigated by a conservative professor at the Cornell Law School); Cornell for alleged antisemitism, pro-Palestinian protests and DEI; and Ithaca College for having (two!) scholarships for Black students. Catholic Workers and members of Jewish Voice for Peace abound in this town (both very activist and much like Quakers). I'm worried that SUNY (State University of New York) of which my community college is a part (largest university in the United States) will also be targeted because we have SUNY learning outcomes that involve multiculturalism, sustainability, critical thinking, and good research that we are required to have in our courses.
