(1,461 posts)Vultures will scavenge the body of a dead vulture, especially if food is scarce. While many vultures rely on their keen sense of smell or sight to locate carrion from other species, they are opportunistic and will not usually pass up a readily available food sourceincluding one of their own species.
Cannibalism among vultures has been documented, though it's relatively uncommon and typically occurs under extreme conditions, such as starvation or overcompetition. Some factors that make vulture carcasses less desirable include:
Tough, dry skin (especially if desiccated)
Potential presence of disease
Lower fat content compared to mammalian prey
Still, if the body is fresh and other food sources are lacking, vulturesespecially species like black vultureshave been observed feeding on conspecifics.
