(14,673 posts)Inaction counts just as much toward the voting result as an actual ballot. Everyone has a vote whether they cast a ballot or not. This isn't like a retail choice where if you don't like either smart phone you can leave the store without one. You get one of the top two candidates as your President, whether you vote with a ballot or not. If you "don't like" either choice, but the thought of one of them greeting you as President on the morning after Election Day absolutely makes you hope that THEY don't win regardless of your inaction, then by all means jump into action and go cast a ballot for the other candidate, if for no other reason than to cancel someone else's vote -- an action which will make it even just a little bit more likely that the candidate you really don't want to win, loses. No guarantee, of course, but when enough people hold their nose and hedge their bets like that, the results could surprise you.
