19. I am thinking back to the Will Smith/Chris Rock incidient

Aug 2025

When Chris Rock stood up on a stage in front of a national audience and demeaned a black woman for having alopecia, a medical condition that causes baldness and also just like stuttering, can wind up causing severe psychological impacts like depression and anxiety because we do not live in a society that is kind to people who are different. Our current disgrace in charge in the WH is an example of mocking people who are different, of mocking people with disabilities. Joe Biden, who also has a stutter, was an example of being courageous and kind and accepting.

I was really disappointing by all the comments after the Will Smith/Chris Rock incident. Not because they flatly said that Will Smith was 100% wrong to strike Chris Rock. He absolutely was. But because many people on DU and across social media refused to treat the horrible mocking of a black woman for a medical condition that undoubtedly causes her emotional distress as anything but "a joke."

And I am guessing that the terrible behavior on this army base was also treated like "a joke" by fellow soldiers and officers alike. I am also now thinking of the school shooter in Uvalde, who was also mocked terribly for his stutter, and for whom the school system refused to get him speech services throughout his school career.

There is no excuse for violence. I am just sad and afraid because the kind of society we are shifting towards, a meaner, crueler society in many cases, that hurts more people, is only going to create more people who may be likely to do something terrible. I will pray every day that our party finds a leader who is able to see us through this terrible time.
