I've had much the same experience, although I'm not sure just who is selling access to my data. I still use my university email account, but cannot keep up with all the spam, much of it political, from both dems AND repubs. My wife is even worse. She gives small donations to many causes, like $5 each, trying to spread the love. Now ninety percent of our USPS mail is funding appeals, addressed to her. She's a soft touch, but she's feeling increasingly over burdened. We're retired, so we too need to be strategic about giving.

It has occurred to us that the recipient causes get funded more than once for every donation: once from the donations themselves, and again every time they sell our data. Some have few scruples about who they sell it to, evidenced by the volume of republican and conservative appeals we receive.
