But it is still literally lying to the court.

I suspect the lawyers are trying to avoid court sanctions because they styled it as a letter, rather than a court filing. But even if it avoids court sanctions, it should still subject them to discipline.

I may just file a grievance, to make sure the applicable ethics boards are formally aware of it.
