Could AI run a whole country? Albania wants to find out [View all]

TIRANA, Albania — While Europe bickers over the safety and scope of artificial intelligence, and as the Trump administration tries to bring more AI into Washington, this small Balkan nation is going full-bore, hoping that AI can fix decades’ worth of governance problems.

Its leader is even mulling having AI models replace government ministers.

Albania’s experiment is only in the early stages. And while some of it is just hypothetical, it’s already raising important global questions about using AI in governance –—including whether powerful AI can really fix human problems, or just replicate them in less-transparent form.

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama suggested last month that AI could be a tool to stamp out corruption and increase transparency, saying the technology could soon become the most efficient member of the country’s government.
