MI-GOV: Michigan Democratic Party-backed education board members back Duggan (I) for governor [View all]
Detroit — Five current members of university boards who were nominated for their statewide elected positions by Michigan Democrats endorsed Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan's independent bid for governor Tuesday.
Rebecca Bahar-Cook, a trustee at Michigan State University, Mark Bernstein and Denise Ilitch, regents at the University of Michigan, and Bryan Barnhill and Anil Kumar, governors at Wayne State University, were among more than 200 current and former elected officials whose support of Duggan was announced during a crowded event inside Michigan Central.
A sixth statewide official nominated by Michigan Democrats, Marshall Bullock II, a member of the State Board of Education, also publicly endorsed Duggan. Bullock, a former state senator from Detroit, works for Duggan as the city's government affairs director.
The university and education board members' decision to break with their party for the 2026 governor's race might boost Duggan's arguments that his independent campaign is viable and might further inflame a divide among Michigan Democrats about how to respond to Duggan's candidacy.
