or earlier, sometime between Tilden/Hayes and Goldwater. Obviously Lincoln was not Conservative. Hayes, the Republican, was still the liberal candidate. Teddy Roosevelt was Republican and standing up for the poor, broke up the corporations, went after the Robber Barons, regulated industries, etc.--but got there by being the VP for assassinated Robber Baron puppet McKinley. By Hoover, Republicans were conservative. But he was involved in humanitarian operations like feeding the hungry during WWI that we'd never now associate with a Republican. Eisenhower was asked by both parties to run, and believed in taxing the rich.

So I think we can attribute Goldwater, Nixon, and Reagan for today's Republican party. But Goldwater was pro-choice, and a Reagan-Bush debate shows both having kind words for immigrants.

W.Bush took it to another level, who knew there would be someone worse? Then there were the people behind them: Carl Rove, Grover Norquist, the Federalist Society, The Heritage Foundation, and several corrupt Supreme Court Justices....

OK, I know you didn't mean to go deep historical on the Republican party. i agree with your point.
