He shot Kirk from the side.

My neck is approximately 4" wide by 6" tall at that angle.

Hit to the left, he severs the spine. Hit to the center, carotid artery. Hit to the right, severs the trachea. High, hits the head. Low, hits the chest (and with a .30-06, will penetrate all the way through and out the other side, destroying lungs and heart tissue).

It wasn't a hard shot.
