There was a report of shots fired at UMass Boston, prompting a large police response on campus Thursday afternoon, the Boston Police Department confirmed.
Shots were reported at 3:45 p.m. near 240 Morrissey Boulevard at the campus's location in Dorchester.
Sky 5 video showed campus employees and students evacuating a school building with their hands in the air.
One student recounted the moment police told students to avoid certain areas of the school, including a residence hall.
"They said there was an incident at the residence halls and they told us to stay away, but eventually everyone went outside and was curious and wanted to see," one student said. "We heard around that there was an active shooter and we saw the cops come."
One officer was seen with a rifle from Sky5 as police officers swarmed the area.
"The officers are still running into one of the university buildings; they have rifles out - this is a very active scene, it's not something you can dismiss right now," former Boston police commissioner Ed Davis said. "It may turn out to be nothing, but from what I see in the activity on the ground, they are still taking this very seriously."
