Who knows if Lincoln would have completely removed the stain of Americas original sin of slavery. Johnson, a southerner, may have been a wise we choice to help heal the nation after the Civil War, but as President he basically fast tracked reunion and undermined the beginnings of Reconstruction. Womens suffrage kind of fell out here as giving all men the right to vote was as big a step as politicians of that time were willing to make.
Grant tried to continue Reconstruction but was no Lincoln. After the disputed election of 1876, Reconstruction ended and Jim Crow was put in place. The Civil Rights act tried to finish what Reconstruction started but it seems weve been back sliding ever since.
