5. Glad to see cities celebrating diversity!

Let's hope more cities and sports events engage in showing people what beauty and progress there is in our diversity.

Tucson has had Tucson Meet Yourself festival since 1974. It is a fantastic celebration of the Old Pueblo's beautiful and enriching diversity. Started by a local folklorist and anthropologist Dr. James “Big Jim” Griffith. Big Jim was honored by the National Endowment for the Arts with a prestigious recognition as a “National Heritage” treasure. He got a beautiful thing started and it continues after his passing not long ago.

This free event goes on for a few days and features music, dancing, storytelling, craft demonstrations, some with
hands-on fun for kids and adults. The food is always a big feature and gives opportunity for many local culture clubs and societies a chance to raise money while introducing people to tasty things from cultures all over the world.

Tucson is a diverse place, that is it's special power. Big Jim saw that and worked to build a community that would keep the learning, honoring, celebrating, going.

If you ever wanted to go to Tucson, it's a multi-cultural adventure anytime with great restaurant, diverse houses of worship and lots of clubs where people celebrate their diverse heritages. But for getting a look at it all in a short time, come in October for Meet Yourself. The food, music, camaraderie, costumes, and bagpipes are worth the trip.
