Stepped on a land mine or such. Both legs blown off. I googled him and that is the gist of what I read.

Mast, who was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan, was first elected to Congress in 2016. He is a U.S. Army veteran, having worked as an explosive ordnance disposal technician in Afghanistan, where he lost both legs after stepping on an improvised explosive device. He later worked as an explosives expert for multiple federal agencies.
