And you said "his lover", does he call the roommate "sweetie" and such? And does he ask his roomie to come and get the gun he stashed? That would explain why he bothered to move the gun from the rooftop to the bushes.

Seems likely to me that he went into it knowing that he would be caught because it seems like he had no get away plan. It's funny looking back how many people were positive this was some trained killer, talking about distractions and a team. Hell I fell into that thinking as well, thought it might be a Mangione type.
