Republican Senator Roman Hruska’s defense of Richard Nixon’s nomination of the most unqualified judge G. Harrold Carswell to the Supreme Court, e. g.

Of course, that was back in the days when supremely unqualified judges did NOT get confirmed to the Court, and, indeed, he wasn’t despite Hruska’s spirited defense of mediocrity as a virtue and asset.
