Kirk was shot with an old .30-06 deer rifle, a weapon capable of only one shot at a time. The focus is, and should be, on military-type assault weapons like the AR-15, which have been used by many mass shooters and are capable of killing large numbers of people in a short time. Any attempt to ban common hunting guns would not only fall flat but would impede serious efforts to limit or ban assault weapons. The Kirk murder doesn't raise the same kind of gun control issues as the mass shootings in schools and other public places.
