27. There was a longstanding theory

That Earhart was spying on behalf of the U.S. on the Japanese military in 1937. That her plane was captured by Japan and that she and her navigator were executed.

That whole premise was started by a 1943 propaganda movie, "Flight For Freedom," but it had no basis in reality.
