I've done my genealogy back to '1600s and found it so frustrating to be unable to go back all my lines because of no maiden name for the wife. Even though she had 16 children and died young. Then the widower remarried and had another big family. Then, sometimes, that wife passed and he remarried and had even more children!
And yes, it appears to us that they were looked at as nothing more than chattel.
