We evolved to have a balance of "hyper-competitors" and "cooperators" because its optimal for species survival. I'm very sure if Chimps and Bonobos were specifically studied in this light, they'd find the same, both inside their populations, and comparing the two species. Chimps are by and large 'righties' (patriarchal, territorial, highly competitive and aggressive) by our definitions, and Bonobos are by and large 'lefties' (matriarchal, more peaceful, apt to share, and much more accepting of "outsiders" ).
