At the least he saw it as a chance to cull out the disloyal Generals, or maybe intimidate them into taking a loyalty oath.
Now he knows there may not be any Generals who stand with him and Trump.
Not good when Trump is just looking for an excuse to go all military state on Americans.

Of course they know how inept and unstable Hegseth is. They get reports of his behavior through the military grapevine.
If Trump attempts a coup, one of the first casualties in defense of America will be Hegseth. He's not respected as a leader.
