One can say they are divided in so many ways that as one people, they don't know of any one thing to unite around. They've been hoodwinked, bamboozled, run amok.
That is not an American exceptionalism, either; this is what divides humans all over the world -- whether to live in the easier delusional world of Self, or to live in a harder reality world of others.
The dark, cynical message from the self-absorbed narcissist leader is that everyone needs to be united with him and to hell with the rest of humanity because, what've they got to lose yadda yadda.

Which is: Are Americans divided about committing to a happier, more free, more prosperous and verdant future for their descendants?
The real on-the-ground divide of the American people is between those who are so lazy that they fear, hate or are indifferent to their neighbor, and those who do the work of loving their neighbor as themselves. And that they teach their children wisely and well by example.
Hate is easy. Love is hard.
