in practical terms, there was scarcely any difference. Among the points of similarity:

All power concentrated in a single leader around whom is built a cult of personality.

Extreme authoritarianism enforced by terror and a highly organized police state (NKVD, Gestapo). Mass arrests, imprisonment, and large scale killing of the civilian population.

Extreme nationalism and a cult of militarism.

State control over practically every aspect of society and life.

Heavy reliance on propaganda and indoctrination, with alternative voices obviously being snuffed out.

Stalin fought against Hitler because he had to, not because he particularly wanted to. The death toll in the Soviet Union was in part due to Stalin's profligate disregard for the value of human life. Something which we see continued in the present day in the way that Putin carries out his war against Ukraine.
