(117 posts)I was an election judge years ago and loved running the precinct election and counting the ballots. It is what the U.S. did since its beginnings, up to the early 2000's. It is what many other countries STILL do. It is considered the "gold standard" to hand-count ballots. That is what we do when there is a challenge to the results due to discrepancies or if the result is within the margin of error.
Do not be fooled by those who say it is too cumbersome to hand-count. Each precinct is small enough to be counted by hand after the polls close on election night. When completed, the results are publicly posted on the door to the voting place. The numbers are no more difficult to manage than the votes in a large high school election -- do-able.
It is clear that the high-jacking of our votes today occurs at the tabulation level, when the paper ballots are fed into a machine to be counted. (Electronic voting, with no paper ballots, is another matter!) We should take that counting step back into our own hands. It would re-instill a confidence in our elections, a confidence that has been lost.
