HOUSTON Election day is inching closer, and a top race will determine wholl fill the vacant District 18 seat in Congress. Its been vacant since Congressman Sylvester Turners passing nearly nine months ago. A new University of Houston Hobby report shows just how close that race could be.
With 16 candidates, its a pretty stacked list of people hoping to win the spot. But according to data collected in the survey Christian Menefee, Amanda Edwards and Jolanda Jones may just round out the top three with chances of a runoff.
he District 18 seat has seen two vacancies in a years time. The first was with longtime Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee's death, and nine months ago with Congressman and former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turners death.
One of the biggest issues for people are civil rights and liberties, and I think many people in the district feel like that their rights have been limited or abridged because they havent had representation, said KHOU 11 political analyst Brandon Rottinghaus.
