...since at least the late '80s. It has now ossified into some sort of reactionary MAGA "bring back the post-WWII manufacturing economy" line, as if that could even be done.

Post-WWII Europe was in ruins; that was the main reason we were on top for a short time. The real crime is that postwar leaders never got their act together with any future planning, aka "industrial policy".

The worst part of the nation's decline is that 50 years ago, any idiot could see what was coming if we didn't get some sort of plan...By the '60s, Japan had made huge strides in technology...Soon those of us in the Midwest began seeing metastasizing urban wastelands and brownfields, which later became known as the "rust belt".
