The Intolerable Acts of 1774 were a series of punitive laws passed by the British Parliament in response to the Boston Tea Party, which closed Boston's port, limited Massachusetts' self-governance, allowed British officials to be tried elsewhere, and required colonists to house British soldiers. These acts, which colonists called the "Intolerable Acts" (and which the British called the Coercive Acts), united the colonies in opposition to British rule and led to the First Continental Congress.
