• Political consultant Dana Williamson was arrested Wednesday and faces a 23-count federal indictment.

• Federal authorities allege Williamson and her employees billed a dormant campaign account for bogus consulting services.

Gov. Gavin Newsom’s former chief of staff was arrested Wednesday on federal charges that allege she siphoned $225,000 out of 2026 gubernatorial hopeful Xavier Becerra’s dormant state campaign account and wrote off $1 million in luxury handbags and high-flying travel as business expenses on her tax returns.

Newsom is not mentioned in connection with the allegations and has not been accused of wrongdoing.

But the attorney for the former chief of staff, Dana Williamson, said that more than a year ago, federal authorities approached her seeking help with some kind of a probe of the governor.

“She told them she had no information to provide them, and then we wind up today with these charges,” Williamson’s attorney McGregor Scott said in a statement to The Times.
