Thirty years ago, GOP leaders found it useful to appear sanctimonious while their base acted crude and clownish. Now, it’s more profitable for the leaders to play the clowns and let their supporters handle the sanctimony.

This is precisely what Shakespeare was conveying with, 'tis too much proved, that with devotion's visage, and pious action we do sugar over the devil himself.'
