3. Festivus was the BIG gift-giving winter solstice holiday of the ancient Roman world.

When Christianity took over, Jesus' birthday was conveniently moved to the winter solstice and Christmas gradually took over from (yikes! Pagan!) Festivus.
That's where the Seinfeld writers got their idea.
