Both of them recognized that the existing system was fundamentally dysfunctional and that there was a rising demand for populism: government that actually represented the best interests of the people more from the ground up than the top down.

Their major divergence is that Bernie was authentic in his long held beliefs, for *rump it was just a costume to wear in order to fool the masses and obtain power. The classic wolf in sheep's clothing, and to some degree it worked, mostly with angry, low information voters.
