56. Superficially, at least, it looks to me like both got what they wanted

Both had trashed each other as the worst of political extremes, and came out of the meeting all smiles and chummy. Big front page headlines and smiling photo handshakes. I know, I know, even Molotov and Ribbentrop managed that, and yesterday isn’t going to postpone World War Three. Even Richard Viguerie and I sit down on occasion, all cordial and smiles. He still thinks I am totally full of “libbrul” shit, and I still think he is the political Prince of Darkness.

What matters is what happens once Mamdani is office. What happens before then is more PR. Whoever spins it best gets the stuffed blue rabbit at the county fair, and it could just as easily be a tie.

Not that past history means in any way it will be repeated, but it has long been the case that the office of Mayor of New York City has been a political dead end. LaGuardia, Wagner, Koch, Giuliani, etc. If Mamdani is going to break that “tradition,” he had best get started early, and a photo op with Trump in the Oval Office will have a short shelf life.
