President Obama is destroying the GOP.. [View all]
and the problem is?
Krauthammer, however, seized on the comments by LaTourette, arguing that the civil war that has broken out among Republicans is bad for the party, and is exactly what President Obama wanted to create. He said that, politically, Obama has won.
I argued a month ago that from the presidents perspective this was never about fiscal issues or economic issues.
He had one objective. He came off of winning election but he still had a recalcitrant House. He wants a four years where he can have his own agenda that he can enact. It would be stopped by the House, the same way the House stopped it in the last two years, said Krauthammer.
What to do?
To destroy the Republicans, to fracture them and to create a civil war in the House, which he has done.
This was extremely clever tactically on his part. (He insisted) that the one thing they had to agree to was an increase in tax rates. If he was only interested in the budget, in fiscally balancing it, he would have said, I dont care how you get the money, you could do it through exemptions and deductions. But he insisted on rates, not because it was an economic issue, but because it was a way that youd have the House divided, youd have them calling each other chuckleheads, and youd have a Speaker who if not deposed, is extremely weakened. And this sets him up for the (next) two years, the four years in which he can have his way over Republicans.
