House Democrat Moves to Impeach Defense Secretary Hegseth Over Deadly Military Strike [View all]

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is facing a growing political storm as a Democratic lawmaker prepares formal articles of impeachment accusing him of murder and other high-level misconduct tied to U.S. military operations.

Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-Mich.) is expected to unveil the impeachment measure Thursday morning at Washington’s Union Station, alongside activists who have held an uninterrupted, round-the-clock protest against the Trump administration. According to Thanedar’s office, the resolution charges Hegseth with “murder,” “conspiracy to murder,” and “reckless and unlawful handling of classified information.”

The move comes on the heels of new reporting and multiple investigations into a deadly September 2, 2025 mission in the Caribbean Sea. The Washington Post reported that Hegseth ordered a follow-up strike that killed two survivors left floating after an initial boat attack. Although the White House did not dispute that a second strike occurred, officials said Adm. Frank M. Bradley was the officer who ultimately approved the order.

Legal experts say the allegations raise serious questions under international humanitarian law, which requires that anyone no longer capable of fighting—known as hors de combat—must not be targeted.
