De Wever has long been known to harbour sympathies toward Russia, but is currently hiding behind legal and geopoilitical fears to justify not working on a way to release the billions.

Following consultations between the major European partners, Germany's Chancellor Friedrich Merz is due to pay De Wever a visit this week to try to talk some sense into him.
