it originated when he was 30 and began to take disciples. But you're right, it wasn't called Christianity (or anything): for a very long time.

And when it first started (and was nameless), no gentiles were allowed. Allowing gentiles required Peter to have a vision three times (he was not the brightest bulb on the tree). It's in the book of Acts, and is a story modern Christians should read and hopefully acquire a little humility. (yeah, I can dream.)
