7. The ironies. Empathy drives liberals to oppose him. Is empathy helpful or harmful, toward the cruel or careless ones?

Many are careless about the lives of others, not imagining the pain that Trump policies would cause to others, and they only care when it affects them personally. Infuriating.

A relative voted for him in 2016. Not sure about 2020 or 2024. Definitely opposes him now. Commented to me recently that he learned it’s important to really pay attention to politics. I am glad to hear, because it means change of heart is possible, and I hope that they circulate their change of heart among their friend groups.

Neighbors believed in Trump’s promises. Someone or something changed America over the decades economically, and they have been led to believe that it was “liberals” — rich liberals — in big cities like New York and Washington — and to hate the identity groups for ‘wanting something for nothing.’

The global economy was good for me, as a steady investor in a booming market — and for 95% of national politicians over the last 30 years. But my old small town generally looks tired, small business replaced with pawn shops. Money is being sucked away from main street to wall street for 30 years, and it shows.

A neighbor still has MAGA stickers plastered on her truck (or her husband’s trucks). Someone flattened her tires, she figures it is because of the stickers. I gave her a hug. She has her hands full, with minimal resources, multiple family health issues, struggling. I see it differently when I see her, because it’s obvious to me then. Many of these people have been drowning slowly, for 40 years. Dog-paddling to stay alive and every year it gets harder to just stay afloat. Trump seemed like a floating life ring to some of them, or a lifeboat that would pull them to an economy they could understand, like the one they remembered from their youth.

There ain’t no path forward without healing, but the delusions and hallucinations are poison standing in the way.

A corrupt financial system is underpinning a lot of this grief.
