(10,867 posts)I'm your neighbor (Green Valley), and we got solar a few years back. Now in winter, we just use little space heaters in whatever room we happen to be using (bedroom, my home office, etc). And if we're in the living room, just pile on the blankets.
In the summer, we open all the windows at night when it's cool, then seal the house up during the day. It generally works 90% of the time to keep things perfectly bearable without turning on the AC.
But still, PG&E is completely out of control. We try to use gas as little as possible. Our water heater went kaput last month, so we used it as an opportunity to put in an electric tankless one. The only gas we use now is the stove, and we use it only seldomly.
Our neighbor behind us is insane. It feels like his roof is just mostly solar panels. He also has a hot tub and assorted other things. His yard is like a mini golf course or something. Hot tub, fountains, lights, etc. I'm pretty sure, when nuclear winter comes, it'll be cockroaches and this guy.
