One does not "HONE" in on anything, one "HOMES" in, as in homing pigeon, or homing device. It implies the ability to precisely locate a target, such as its home dovecote for a pigeon, or the beach it was born on for a female sea turtle.

One hones a knife. The two are not interchangeable.
