Between the booze and cigarettes he literally has a chemical imbalance. Anyone who drinks and smokes like him for so many years is ill and it takes several years of abstaining to get well.
Can you imagine the hangovers he has had in his life? I'm not judging the guy this is from my own experiences with the bottle. Being a funtional drunk doen't make it right.
