The problem was Rather accepted a typed report on Bush where Rather spoke to the secretary said to have typed it, who verified the CONTENT.
As soon as it was shown on TV, within minutes, " internet experts" were online saying the font didn't exist back then. The most likely reason was that a Karl Rove operative had a real document retyped on a more modern typewriter and passed it to the man, a Texas politician, who gave it to rather with a weird story of how he received it.
The fact is Rather, a respected journalist, thought the secretary's confirmation that it was not inconsistent with her memory was enough.
That makes the potential parallels even stronger. Rather had what he thought was a well researched investigation. The truth was Bush was a terrible national guard who didn't take his responsibilities seriously. The letter not being authentic was used to say the entire investigation was wrong.
However, by 2004, Bush's poor job in the NG did not matter to voters per a poll asking if their support changed if rumors about it were true. The answer was almost no change at all.
