Which of course pissed him off, and put him in no mood to show gratitude towards Machado. If anything, he is now angry she left him as the butt of jokes over her medal.

Yes, I get why she did it. She was desperate after Trump dismissed her as "not respected" and let Maduro loyalists remain as Venezuela's leaders. So she tried one last desperate attempt to hit it out of the park, appealing to his pathological ego. But Machado swung and whiffed so bad she hit herself with the bat.
