Morons and greedy despots to the present day get confused. The Portuguese, centuries later, also practiced geographic disinformation in order to maintain their proprietary trade routes. Portugal had discovered the best winds to get around Cape Horn were reached by first sailing west toward the unknown horizon, before heading south to catch the easterlies around Southern Africa and on into the Indian Ocean. No maps and no tales got out to threaten their trade monopoly with India and China for a century wherein Portugal became the wealthiest nation on earth.
