Codes in the HTTP 500 block are application level codes - typically meaning that there is an access error, possibly a Denial of Service attack, on an upstream server to where the site server is located. It could also be due to heavy volumes or poor caching at a mid-point in the chain, and typically such errors force a rerouting of traffic to secondary DNS servers. So yes, it could just be a misconfigured server, or it could be someone playing silly buggers with a DNS server for a potential attack.
