OK, now for the really bad news. Anyone looking at these negotiations, especially given Obamas previous behavior, cant help but reach one main conclusion: whenever the president says that theres an issue on which he absolutely, positively wont give ground, you can count on him, you know, giving way and soon, too. The idea that you should only make promises and threats you intend to make good on doesnt seem to be one that this particular president can grasp.
And that means that Republicans will go right from this negotiation into the debt ceiling in the firm belief that Obama can be rolled.
At that point he can redeem himself by holding firm but because the Republicans dont think he will, they will play tough, almost surely forcing him to actually hit the ceiling with all the costs that entails. And look, if I were a Republican I would also be betting that hell cave.
So Obama has set himself and the nation up for a much uglier confrontation than we would have had if he had set a negotiating position and held to it.

Of all the compromises that could be made to get the GOP to budge, this is fairly inoffensive.

Because the whiners need to whine, otherwise they would no longer qualify as whiners

We should not do this. It is stopgap, and the Republicans will demand cuts to Social Security

So you want to raise taxes on everyone in order to raise taxes on whatever you define as "rich".

The rich have not had 'zero taxes' and this deal only raises the very rich by 4.6 %

I agree and would add the republicans get 80% of what they want in this deal. n/t.

Seems to me like the Republicans doubled the income level to be taxed that Obama campaigned on.
