pocket knives, which has changed tremendously since I was a boy. In those days the swiss army knife was king. Now the variety of folding "pocket" knives is dizzying. And the number of fixed blade designs has exploded as well. I am sure that I'm well behind the trend but it seems to me that the market for "tactical" knives is just as big if not bigger than that of tactical firearms.

To be sure, knives are less of threat in a crowded room. And they are safer in general - although it might be easier to injure yourself while cleaning or sharpening a knife the type of injury is usually minor. To actually harm someone else you do need to catch them and that might be a challenge for some of the NRA crowd.
